Julius L. Chambers
"Securing the Blessings of Liberty:
The Fight for Civil Rights"
A native of North Carolina, Julius Chambers received holds an M.A. from the University of Michigan, a J.D. from the University of North Carolina and an L.L.M. from Columbia University School of Law. He opened a one-man law practice in Charlotte, which became the first integrated law civil rights firm in North Carolina. With his founding partners, Mr. Chambers helped shape civil rights law by winning landmark U.S. Supreme Court rulings on issues such as employment discrimination and busing to achieve school desegregation. The firm has successfully litigated dozens of major school desegregation and employment discrimination cases. From 1984 until 1993 Mr. Chambers served as Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in New York. From 1993 to 2001 he served as Chancellor of North Carolina Central University. He is back in private practice and continues to act as the Director of the UNC Center for Civil Rights.

 

Linda S. Greene
"Thurgood Marshall: Dedicated to the Proposition . . ."
Linda Greene, a California native, is Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Wisconsin and the Evjue-Bascom Professor of Law at the UW Law School. Her educational credentials include a B.A. from California State University, Long Beach and a J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. She was a civil rights attorney at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in New York and served as Counsel to the United States Senate Judiciary Committee. Professor Green served as the Chair of the American Association of Law Schools Section on Minority Groups in 1992 and represented the Black Coaches Association in 1994 in their dispute with the National Collegiate Athletic Association. From 1990-1994 she was a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights. She is currently doing research for a book on Thurgood Marshall.

 

Gary Orfield
"Establishing Justice ... Desegregation Then and Now"
Gary Orfield is Professor of Education and Social Policy and founding co-director of The Civil Rights Project at Harvard University. He holds a B.A. from the University of Minnesota and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His central interest has been the development, implementation and impact of social policy, to create equal opportunity for success in American society. His research and work is focused on school and housing desegregation, urban policy and the implementation of civil rights laws as they to educational and governmental institutions and policy. Professor Orfield's has published several books, including Racial Inequity in Special Education (with Daniel Losen,) Raising Standards or Raising Barriers? Inequality and High-Stakes Testing in Public Education, Diversity Challenged: Evidence on the Impact of Affirmative Action and Religion, Race and Justice in a Changing America.
